I have watched a couple of release videos but noone has covered siege battles. Originally posted by Hakuna Matata:Hi guys, long time Total War guy here I own most of them and one thing I have found lacking in recent titles is the Castle Siege battles, they aren't what they used to be imo compared to Shogun 2, Rome total war etc.

Also look for TW Warhammer 1 videos as the mechanics of that game are basically identical to this (TW Warhammer 2 is basically a big expansion pack - and if you own TWW 1 content the factions in that are unlocked for free in TWW2 - same as the blood DLC also being unlocked like that hwne its released - so many are buying TWW2 and then waiting for the first TWW1 to go on sale (it has already been on sale before now so it likely will again - Halloween sales etc.) Overall if you like fantasy or Warhammer then this is THE game for you if you want the TW experience.Įdit re the post above mine - there are archers on the walls defending. I also think that cutting down on the map area changes how you play out sieges you also lose the multi-layer settlements which often required you to bring more than one army even if only one army was defending so the sieges are more friendly to fewer attack stacks than before - this works well within the game as you're often a bit more limited on settlements than before so you've got to make wise choices. Charting ramparts taking the towers to stop the attrition on your own force watching huge warbeasts smash gates etc. The AI does generally pretty well at defending settlements and building towers/rams is important in order to help take the settlements. Overall I do miss the huge maps showing big settlements but at the same time against the AI I find these sieges more of a battle and less of a "Trick the AI". So that brings some new elements into the game that you have to factor in depending on the faction you're playing and the units you've got access to. Large warbeasts can also act like battering rams and attack walls/gates. Or you can build siege towers and battering rams to take into battle with you (rams builds 1 at a time and towers builds 2 at a time).Ĥ) Most factions have artillery of some form but some have very poor artilery units for siege (better against beasts or troops). This is partly to speed up and make them a less drawn out battle partly to help the AI and also because most of the fantasy settlementes would be VAST to try and simulate.ģ) When you start a siege battle you get the typical TW experience you can keep the siege activity going turn to turn and starve the defenders out (first they starve and take a health penalty then they fleet and you win without a battle. One side (majority) is the outside and then there's a strip of the interior of the settlement.Ģ) This means that you've basically got a much more accellerated siege without a lot of the "running around behind" that many other TW games could have. This creates a line divive on the map (nota dead straight line though).

You shoudl be able to find siege battles on youtube.Īs a run down essentially theres a few key changesġ) Instead of having the full settlement simulated there is instead only one wall of the settlement shown. It has to be a bug that you can't run through an open gate, it has to be. And it's worse when the unit that has the gate open stands there keeping it open so you can't attack the gate or run through. There is also a bug (I hope it's a bug) where the enemy will open the gates to let units through, and you can't send yours in. I mean wow the non-siege battles are so good. Cannon towers vs enemies, taking out enemy towers with your own trebs and cannons and breaking through walls, the tough battles in the streets, it was all fun.Įverything else about this game is superior though. Skavens can summon units outside the walls which totally screws up the attacker AI. There's magic so your units pushing rams or towers get zapped. There aren't any archers so far to defend the walls and rain fire down on towers and rams to catch fire so there might be a few javelins thrown and that's it. There are defensive towers with ridiculously long range. For one, there are almost no siege units to use so you just run monsters to the gates and troops to the walls with ladders (that they automatically have) if you don't want to waste time with towers. It's nowhere near what Rome, Medieval 2 etc. I've only fought one siege, me as lizards vs a skaven fortification.
